A. Tier Types:

1. Metadata - Contains file name for FLEx exportation

2. Transcription: Parent Tier - Contains phonetic transcription of a given participant’s utterance in Mixe orthography

3. Translation: Symbolic Association with Transcription - Contains translation into Spanish

4. Target Utterance (Target and non-target children only): Symbolic Association with Transcription - Contains research partner’s interpretation of the target utterance; transcribed in Mixe orthography

5. Words: Symbolic Subdivision of Transcription OR Target Utterance - Tokenized transcription tier for FLEx export

6. xds (Adults only): Symbolic Association with Transcription - Contains a code indicating who a participant is speaking to, using the following abbreviations:

A = adult
C = nontarget child
T = target child
U = unknown addressee
ANTA = adult dictating speech to target child to be repeated to another adult
ANTC = adult dictating speech to target child to be repeated to another child
ANTS = adult dictating speech to target child to be repeated to Sophie (i.e. the camera)

Turns with more than one type of addressee are written with types separated by +.

B. Tier Names:
===============

Tiers of type 2-5 above all have the structure XXX_Type-FLExType-lg, where

1. XXX is a three-letter code representing the participant. 
2. Type is one of the six types outlined in section A above.
3. FLExType in this case is restricted to two options: txt for Transcription, Target Utterance, and Words, and gls for Translation.
4. lg is either mto (Totontepec Mixe) for Transcription, Target Utterance, and Words or es (Spanish) for Translation. 

*NB on tier languages: I have arranged my FLEx database in such a way that all phonetic transcriptions of child utterances are registered as a different language, while everything else is registered as Totontepec Mixe. The child language font in FLEx and in ELAN is Charis SIL, while the font for all other tiers is Arial.*

The first exception is the Metadata tier, which is in all cases labeled “Interlinear-title-mto.” This tier contains the title of the file and corresponds to the title of the text in FLEx.

The second exception is the xds tier, which is in all cases called XXX-xds, again where XXX is a three-letter code representing the participant.
